Matthew 24:42

Verse 42. Watch. Be looking for his coming. Be expecting it as near; as a great event; as coming in an unexpected manner. Watch the signs of his coming, and be ready.

(m) "therefore" Lk 12:39, Rev 3:3, 16:15

Matthew 24:44

Verse 44. Be ye also ready. Lk 21:36 says, that he charged them to pray always, that they might be accounted worthy to escape those things--the judgments coming upon the wicked--and to stand before the Son of man--i. e. to stand there approved by him, or admitted to his favour. He also charged them Lk 21:34 to take heed, and not to suffer their hearts to be overcharged with surfeiting, or too much eating, or drunkenness, or the cares of this life, lest that day should come upon them unawares; things improper if there were no judgment-- peculiarly mad and wicked when the judgment is near.

Mark 13:33

Verse 33.

(u) "Take ye heed" Mt 24:42, 25:13, Lk 12:40, 21:34, Rom 13:11,12 1Thes 5:6, Rev 16:15

Mark 13:35

Verse 35. Watch ye. Be diligent, faithful, and waiting for the return of your Lord, who will come at an unexpected hour.

Master of the house. Denoting here the Lord Jesus.

At even, or at midnight or, at etc.: This refers to the four divisions into which the Jews divided the night.

Luke 21:36

Verse 36. To stand before the Son of man. These approaching calamities are represented as the coming of the Son of man to judge Jerusalem for its crimes. Its inhabitants were so wicked that they were not worthy to stand before him and would be condemned, and the city would be overthrown. To stand before him here denotes approbation, acquittal, favour, and is equivalent to saying that they would be free from these calamities, while they should come upon others. Rom 14:4, Ps 1:5, 130:3, Rev 6:17. Perhaps, also, there is a reference here to the day of judgment. Mt 24:1, and following.
